My family were staff to William Phillipps, Shipowner and owner of Reigate Lodge from the 1830's until at least the 1870's. He not only employed Robert Walter and his family in various capacities within the household, but he seemed to have helped others of the family find professional roles outside the household. I'm not sure if Phillipps had role in cricket, but my 1859 Robert' nephew and my great, great grandfather, Clarence Richard Walter got his first class debut in Reigate in 1859. Clarence later went to Wales and was pivotal in building what is now the Glanmorgan County Cricket Club. If anyone has any more information I'd love to hear it

I was there for 9 months in 1977. Mr T and Iain Banner managed the gardens, Iain's wife Sue worked in the kitchen at first but became a full-time member of staff. Other staff members were Gordon and Alfie. I can't remember names of other staff members but they were all really great. There was so much going on like canoeing, camping, rock climbing, disco's, days out and loads more. I loved it. Some of the guys built a kestrel box and put it up in the grounds. I never got to see it occupied but I'm sure it did. I looked at a Google Earth image recently and the grounds are completely overgrown now! Some guys I hung about with were David LLoyd. Tim Rolls and Trevor Chandler - Portsmouth lads. Wonderful time

Further to my earlier rememberances! About the last house visable on the left was a post office run by Millie Brett and her sister and opposite was a bakers.

View is to Kennedys sweet shop c.1950. Girls County School behind wall now 6th form college. It was on Great Doods estate whose ice house is buried in mound behind wall. When the one way traffic system was introduced more than one lorry found the out of camber turn to the right too much and toppled over.

My Grandma (Joyce Nye - later Joyce Lewis) and her family grew up in Meadvale. Her brother is called Ron (still alive) and her sister was called Kath. Their father ran a Butchers shop at either 36 or 38 Somerset Road, which I believe is the building standing in the centre of this picture. The family all lived here throughout the war years. It is interesting to see that this Butchers was once called E. Peters. I wonder if my Great Grandfather ran the business for E. Peters at this time, or if he bought it and changed the name to his? I will have to ask my Grandma. Either way the family lived upstairs. Do you have any more photographs of this building please? My grandma is now 96 years old and lives in a care home in Much Wenlock, Shropshire. She is stone deaf and we have trouble communicating with her now. To be able to show her these pictures of Meadvale with more clarity would be fantastic. She lost her father when she was in her ealy 20's, and when married, sometime in the 1950's, she moved to Bridgnorth, Shropshire where she started her own family. She often talks about Meadvale. Lovely to hear all these memories of Reigate very interesting and nostalgic I am in my 70s now don’t know where the time goes so really lovely to remember these times when we were young

Regarding Suzanne’s comment above, I have a video of my 104 year old Nan saying how her friend’s little boy was killed by a bomb in Earlswood. She didn’t mention his mother also died though. I wonder if it’s the same people.

further to Anthony's comment's: You must have lived near the Martin brothers and opposite Mrs Freeman with her twin daughters. The Knights at 47 were another family from mine, must have made problems for the post man, there was a post box in the road then! I went to pine end school in the 5os and left 1963 it was the best years of life, I would love a photo of pine end school, so my children could put it in a frame and have it as a remembrance of the time there mother was the happiest of her childhood, I would love to know where I can get photos of the pine end school, I send all my love to the old pine end school girl, I would cherish a photo please can anyone tell me where I can buy one from, your Janet Amos

I did my Preliminary Training here when I started Nursing at Guy's in October 1954.

I lived at number 47 from Birth (1945) with Mum, Dad and Brother until about 1952 before moving to Wray Park Road. Mrs Fergusson lived at 45, and the Knights at 49. I remember the Michelmores (Cliff & Jean) leaving for their Honeymoon from the house on the bend at the top of the road. They were married I believe in the Methodist Church next to Wraggs Cycle Shop in the town.

I went to pine end from 1985 until 1991 some good years and some bad would love to see more people post up their photos.

This photo appears to predate the horse trough which stands outside the second house on the left, next door to the one with the bay window.

When I was 9 years old I would cycle from my home in Dorking on a Sunday to Reigate swimming pool, jump about in the pool because there were so many people in the pool you could not easily swim, I would then cycle home to Dorking, each way 7.5 miles. Loved the adventure, now I am 73 year old walking is my adventure.

I was interested to come across this picture of Hethersett having been connected to my family. Although a bit vague, from conversations with my maternal Grandmother, she along with her Mother Elsie and her own Parents lived in something like a stable block above what I think were the stables as my Grandmother's Grandfather was involved with providing the horse and carriage transport for the house - they were the Pescud family. My Grandmother sometimes talked about the smell of horse leather and of a vivid thunderstorm when they lived there. I would guess it was around the 1920's-1930's (she was born 1917) because by the second world war, my Grandmother and her Mum were living in Bath where she met my Grandfather and got married before moving to Poole in the 1950's. My Grandmother died in 2003. Her Mum's Brother - Arthur Pescud - went on to be a Butler for his working life, latterly being a Butler at a large house near West Meon in Hampshire. My Grandmother did visit the house with my Aunt back in - I think - the 1990's while on holiday and mentioned about it being connected to the RNIB.

It was great to be in touch with Wendy Fraser and Jenny Armstrong/Baldwyn, and I would love to be in communication with for example Helen MacDonald who has a photo of her and schoolmates in their grey and green Woodside school uniforms. And Rosemary Mees/Simmons was eager to be in touch with her schoolfriend Jenny Baldwyn, and vice versa; I have the latter's email address but not Rosemary's. Rosemary more generally was eager to be in touch with me for my further photos and info about Woodside. A gremlin-disguised version of my email address is on the above website, and I'd warmly welcome emails from David Ryves, Rosemary Mees/Simmons and others. It's so lovely to get all this background about my beloved great-aunt! and to be able to give information and get people in touch with each other.

Hello David Ryves - oh my goodness! How wonderful that you knew my beloved great-aunt Sylvia! Yes, I often stayed at North Court; and I will instantly ask my cousin Angus Robson (Rupert sadly died) what he remembers. And Sylvia lived at Mead House in Linkfield Lane with her aunt and sisters (one of them my grandmother), and then started her school at Woodside. I would be fascinated to see the film clip, and also the reference - I know that my cousins would also love to see them. I DO hope that you see this; putting email addresses is understandably not allowed on this website, but if you google me you should find my email address somewhere; it would be so exciting to hear more! I was at High Beech in 1958/59 and as above, enjoyed my time there. I remember Mr Smith and a Mr Taylor, both treated me kindly. I've made a trip back there, and it is so run down, but did get the chance to walk around the grounds. If you manage to go there, the memories just flood back.

Hello Jill Goulder - I just stumbled onto this thread and apologise for gatecrashing it with only a little about 'Old Reigate'. I knew you great-aunt Sylvia Lloyd well when I was a child - she was the person who introduced my mother to teaching in WWII after my mother & her mother were evacuated from Malaya and lived out the war with her maternal parents-in-law, the Silcock family, at Broomwood, Reigate Road, Reigate. Sylia & my mother remained lifelong friends and my mother and I went to stay with her at North Court, Lower Hadres on many occasions in School holidays. Her young cousins Rupert & Angus (Robson?) lived close to her and although slightly older than me, put up with keeping me company on occasions! I have it that my mother started teaching with Sylvia at 'Meade House School' during the war - I may be wrong about this as I also have a post-war address book which gives Sylvia's address as being Woodside School, Linkfield Lane, Redhill. I think I have a few letters Sylvia wrote over the years to my mother (who went on to start a small school in Malaya before teaching at Cottesmore School in Sussex for many years - she retired from classroom teaching in her early 80's!). I even think I have a 'reference' Sylvia wrote for my mother attesting to her ability as a teacher. Curiously, I have amongst my mother's 'nick nacks' a small silver shield engraved: 'School Racket R.H.S. 1912 Sylvia Lloyd' I believe this was originally screwed to the front of a book (a prize?). You're welcome to have it if you would like it. I also have a some snippets of a cine film from the early 1960's in which Sylvia appears - it is now digitised so in easily viewable format. My memories of Sylvia are very fond - she was a remarkable and very kindly woman. If you are interested in any of the above please let me know.

I'm certain this is the Eastern end of Grovehill Road in Redhill. The beautifully curved wall with the sign writing is still there.

I think this became Choppins Bakery. Cant read the door sign. Picked up many Large, Light, tin there.

My wife is related to four brothers named Clinch who were at the orphanage between 1931 and 1944. Do you have any memories and photographs from these years?
